This page aims to highlight important events that have taken place in the history of Drug Court, including significant milestones such as the establishment of the court, the appointment of the first permanent Chief Judge, and the implementation of new initiatives to address drug-related crimes and substance abuse in the Maldives.
The Drug Act 2011 paved the way for the establishment of the Drug Court, which was founded under Article 34(a) of the Act. This court was created to handle cases involving drug-related offenses and to provide a more effective and efficient way of addressing drug-related problems in society. The establishment of the Drug Court was a significant step in the government's efforts to combat drug abuse and addiction.
On this historic day, the first judges of the newly established Drug Court were appointed and sworn in, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Drug Court Rehabilitation System. The five judges who were selected for the Court were Uz.Mahaz Ali Zahir, Uz.Hussain Shamath Mahir, Uz.Adul Sattar Abdul Hameed, Uz.Zubair Mohamed and Uz.Mohamed Easa Fulhu.
After Drug Court’s Regulation was gazetted, the court officially commenced its activities.
The official website of Drug Court was inaugurated by the then Chief Justice Uz. Ahmed Faiz in a ceremony held at the Funhiya Building, where the Court was operating at that time.
Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir of D1 Section delivered Drug Court's first verdict, which consisted of an Initial Sentence and a Rehabilitation Order.
Hon. Mohamed Wahidhudheen, the then Vice President of Maldives, officially opened the Drug Court Building located on Izzudheen Street of Maafannu. The building was renovated specifically to accommodate the court.
Drug Court submitted its Annual Report to the National Drug Control Council for the first time, which contained crucial data on the cases heard over the past year as well as highlighting administrative challenges faced by the court.
Drug Court held its first hearing via video conferencing by connecting to K. Himafushi Magistrate Court using a video link.
Drug Court held its first Graduation Ceremony to recognize and appreciate individuals who had successfully completed their rehabilitation programs.
A web portal was established between Drug Court and Maldives Police Service with the aim of enhancing communication between the two entities for exchanging information about crimes committed by drug offenders.
